After Detox: Your Next Step Is Outpatient Treatment in New Jersey
Step down to IOP or outpatient in North Brunswick, NJ — or virtually anywhere in the state.
Clinically reviewed by Marsha Tipelin, LCSW, LCADC
Detox gets the substances out of your body. It doesn't treat the addiction — and the weeks right after detox or residential treatment are exactly when structured support matters most. Whether you're completing alcohol detox or another program, what comes next determines your long-term outcome.
Diamond Counseling Center provides that next step: intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient treatment in North Brunswick, NJ, and virtually anywhere in the state. You keep living at home, working, and caring for your family while continuing real, structured treatment.
Call (732) 248-1805 or verify your insurance below. Free, same-business-day benefits verification — you can have your next level of care arranged before discharge day.
What "Stepping Down" Means
Addiction treatment works as a continuum. Most people move through it in steps: medical detox → residential or inpatient rehab → intensive outpatient (IOP) → outpatient counseling → ongoing recovery support.
Leaving detox or residential care and going straight back to daily life with no follow-up program is the most common point where treatment falls apart. A step-down program keeps the structure, accountability, and clinical support in place while you return to your normal responsibilities.
Diamond provides both step-down levels — IOP and standard outpatient — for adults 18 and older, so your care can taper with you instead of ending abruptly.
Step Down to IOP — Days, Evenings, or Virtual
Our IOP runs in North Brunswick with a daytime track (in person) and an evening track (Mon 6–9 PM in person, Tue–Wed 6–9 PM virtual) for people going back to work after treatment. IOP is typically 12 weeks, with length based on clinical need. Small groups plus individual and family therapy.
If you completed treatment far from home, or transportation is a barrier, our virtual IOP delivers the same program to New Jersey residents, with a weekly in-person visit to our North Brunswick office for urine screening.
When IOP is complete — or if you need a lighter level from the start — you can continue in standard outpatient counseling with the same team.

Haven't Detoxed Yet?
We do not provide medical detox. If you're still using and may face withdrawal — especially from alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids — medical detox needs to come first, and stopping suddenly on your own can be dangerous.
Call us anyway: (732) 248-1805. We'll point you toward appropriate detox options and plan your step-down to IOP with us, so there's no gap in care when you finish.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do right after finishing detox?
Enter a structured step-down program — usually IOP — as soon as possible after discharge, ideally with no gap. Call us before your discharge date and we can verify your benefits the same business day so your next level of care is already in place.
Is IOP enough after detox, or do I need residential rehab?
It depends on your clinical situation — many people step down from detox directly to IOP; others need residential care first. Our assessment determines the right level, and if you need a level we don't provide, we'll tell you and help you find it.
How long is outpatient treatment after detox?
IOP is typically 12 weeks, with length based on clinical need rather than a fixed calendar. Many clients then continue with standard outpatient counseling at a lower frequency.
Can I go back to work while in a step-down program?
Yes. Our evening IOP meets Monday through Wednesday, 6–9 PM (Monday in person at North Brunswick, Tue–Wed virtual), specifically so you can return to work after detox or residential treatment without choosing between your job and your recovery.
Do you provide detox?
No. We treat people who don't need medical detox or have already completed it. If you need detox first, call us — we'll point you in the right direction and plan your step-down to IOP.
Don't Leave a Gap in Your Care
The step between detox and daily life is where recovery is won or lost. Admissions is available Monday–Friday, 9 AM–6 PM. Call us, or submit the insurance form and we'll call you back with your benefits the same business day.
