Can I Keep My Job While in Addiction Treatment? Yes — Here's How

The single biggest reason working people delay addiction treatment is fear of losing their job. Here's what most people don't know: for many, treatment doesn't require leaving work at all.

Outpatient treatment — including intensive outpatient (IOP) — is designed so you keep living at home, keep working, and get structured clinical treatment around your schedule. At Diamond Counseling Center in North Brunswick, NJ, our evening IOP meets Monday–Wednesday, 6:00–9:00 PM — Monday in person, Tuesday and Wednesday by secure video — specifically for people who work during the day.

Call (732) 248-1805 — free insurance verification, generally the same business day, and your employer is never contacted.

You May Not Need to Leave Work for Residential Rehab

Not everyone needs to go away for 30 days. Addiction treatment has levels, and the right one depends on a clinical assessment — not on what treatment looks like in movies:

  • Outpatient counseling — weekly sessions, minimal schedule impact
  • Intensive outpatient (IOP) — about 9 hours per week over three sessions, day or evening
  • Residential/inpatient — live-in care for those who clinically need it

Many working adults qualify for IOP as their starting level. Our assessment tells you honestly which level you need — and if it's a level we don't provide, we'll say so and help you find it.

The Evening IOP: Treatment That Fits Around a Workday

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday — 6:00 to 9:00 PM (Monday in person at North Brunswick, Tue & Wed virtual)
  • Typically 12 weeks, with length based on clinical need; small groups plus individual and family therapy
  • Virtual IOP for NJ residents — attend by secure video with a weekly in-person visit for urine screening

You leave work at 5, get treatment at 6, and you're home the same night. No leave of absence, no explaining a month-long disappearance. Learn more about our evening IOP.

Does My Employer Have to Know?

No — seeking treatment is your private health information. A few things worth knowing (general information, not legal advice):

  • Your treatment records have strong confidentiality protections under federal law — substance use treatment records are among the most protected health records that exist.
  • If you attend evening or virtual IOP, treatment typically doesn't touch your work schedule at all.
  • If you do need time off, the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) gives many employees at covered employers the right to job-protected leave for treatment of a serious health condition, which can include substance use disorder treatment. Whether it applies to you depends on your employer and situation — an employment attorney or your HR policies can confirm specifics.
  • Many employers have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) — a confidential benefit that can help arrange treatment. Using an EAP is confidential; details aren't reported to your manager.

What If I Wait?

Addiction doesn't stay contained to evenings and weekends. The performance slips, absences, and close calls that come with waiting are a far bigger threat to your job than a treatment program your employer never sees. Getting treatment while you're still employed, insured, and stable is the strongest position you'll ever do it from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go to rehab without quitting my job?

Yes. Outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment are designed for people who keep working. Diamond's evening IOP meets Monday–Wednesday, 6–9 PM — Monday in person at North Brunswick, Tuesday and Wednesday virtual (secure video). Virtual IOP is for New Jersey residents; a weekly in-person visit to our North Brunswick office for drug screening is required.

Will my employer find out I'm in treatment?

Not from us — your treatment is confidential health information with strong federal protections. Evening and virtual scheduling means treatment typically never touches your workday.

How many hours a week is IOP?

About 9 hours across three evening sessions, plus individual and family therapy. IOP is typically 12 weeks, with length based on clinical need.

Do I have to do inpatient rehab first?

Not necessarily. Many people start at the IOP level. A clinical assessment determines what you need — if you require detox or residential care first, we'll tell you and help you find it, then plan your step-down back to us.

Can I take FMLA leave for addiction treatment?

Many employees at covered employers can — substance use disorder treatment can qualify as a serious health condition under FMLA. Specifics depend on your employer and situation; this is general information, not legal advice.

Is virtual IOP as real as in-person?

It's the same program — same groups, same clinicians, same schedule — available to New Jersey residents, with a weekly in-person visit to our North Brunswick office for urine screening.
